ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Student Health Services is recruiting for two full-time Licensed Psychotherapist, Case Managers.  

One of the two Case Manager positions has a 4-week summer work break. Positions with summer work breaks (partial year career) contain regularly scheduled non-work, unpaid periods during which the incumbent remains an employee and retains health benefits, but is not at work.

The Case Managers currently follow a hybrid remote work schedule: 3 days on site and 2 days working remotely. This requires a telecommuting agreement and adherence to the UCSC Telecommuting/Remote Work Guidelines. The employee shall be available in a full-time capacity during assigned telecommuting work hours (specific hours to be discussed with supervisor). While telecommuting/remote working, the employee is responsible for ensuring a worksite environment suitable for accomplishing their regular job duties during scheduled hours of work and, if applicable, arranging for dependent care just as they would if they were working at the regular UCSC worksite.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services (SHS) strives to create a caring and supportive environment to assist students in improving their physical and emotional well-being to aid in their academic success. We are a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological services to diverse students on the UC Santa Cruz campus. Comprising a variety of Clinical Services, including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Laboratory, and X-ray, SHS also has an onsite retail pharmacy, offering both prescriptive pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter products. Other departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; CARE (Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education) the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance Programs. Student Health Services employs approximately 120 staff including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. We welcome staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.       

JOB SUMMARY

The Case Manager provides services designed to assist students in optimizing their educational experience and minimizing the impact of illness, injury and emotional distress on their academic careers by coordinating mental health care through a network of campus and community resources. 

Under the direction of the Integrative Behavioral Health Supervisor, the Case Manager provides mental health care, case management coordination, and support to the Student Health Services (SHS) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) clinical providers.  This position will also work with a variety of Division of Student Success (DSAS) departments that serve students, as well as provide consultation services for faculty and staff in dealing with distressed students, coordinating mental health resources and services with clinical providers, residential life, and the colleges.

In discharging these duties, the Case Manager is expected to be keenly sensitive to issues of gender, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities, etc. and to be skilled with techniques for counseling students with diverse backgrounds.

All the Licensed Case Manager's activities are performed within the limits of the standards and ethical principles of their professional organization, as well as applicable legal mandates for mental health professionals in the State of California.

JOB DUTIES

70% - Case Management

Performs assessment and consultation to the medical team on the biopsychosocial factors relating to diagnosis and recommended treatment of patients.

Works collaboratively with primary care providers, clinic nurses, medical assistants, psychiatrists, mental health providers, and individuals from other clinical units to provide culturally competent care for a diverse student population.

Monitors client/patient progress with recommended treatment plans and assures effective coordination of care between providers at CAPS, Student Health Center, hospitals and other treatment providers.

Provides case management support to primary care providers at the Student Health Center regarding mental health and physical health needs.

Provides COVID-19 contact tracing and support to UCSC students.

Serves as liaison between the Student, hospital, treatment programs, campus and community resources. Develops and aids in the use of community resources. Maintains current knowledge of University Health Services, campus, and community resources.

Professionally responsible for the soundness and validity of recommendations, services, and referrals but is expected to seek advice from supervisor on unusual or uniquely complex client responses or on problems outside their area of expertise.

Assists with monitoring and tracking students as they move through the mental health system, which includes Counseling and Psychiatry, hospitalization, and referral to off-campus outpatient treatment.

15% - Consultation and Outreach

Provides consultation to other departments, staff, administrators, and faculty to enhance the social, personal, and academic functioning of students with severe psychological difficulties.

Functions as a resource and may provide educational and consultative services to groups and organizations.

May participate in on campus and community groups and consortiums to improve efforts for integrated behavioral health care.

15% - Counseling and Clinical

Provides brief counseling and psychotherapy with undergraduate and graduate students (individuals, couples, and groups) with a broad range of co-occurring medical and mental health needs, functional and socioeconomic limitations.

Provides crisis assessment and crisis intervention.

Performs behavioral interventions, motivational interviewing, brief psychotherapy and case management on a full range of cases including high-risk concerns.

All licensed staff will provide coordination and consultation for the After-Hours

Crisis Services as scheduled.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid California licensure, in good standing, in Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy 
  • Expertise in clinical case management in a medical or integrated behavioral health setting
  • Strong knowledge and experience providing psychological diagnoses, brief interventions, and case management services to university students. Able to rapidly provide these services while working in a fast-paced environment where interruptions may be frequent and task-shifting is required
  • Demonstrated multicultural competence in mental health service provision. Knowledge of how race, ethnic identity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, privilege and multiculturalism relate to psychological service delivery in a university setting
  • Broad skills and competencies associated with providing multicultural counseling services and experience with communities underserved in mental health care
  • Experience providing service to a young adult population
  • Strong familiarity with a wide range of psychological interventions including harm reduction, assessment, crisis intervention, crisis management, and brief psychotherapy
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team of mental health and health providers
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in developing liaison relationships and consulting with diverse faculty, staff, public and private mental health providers and students regarding student mental health issues
  • Highly effective written communication skills
  • Highly effective interpersonal and verbal communication skills; Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner
  • Flexibility and willingness to accommodate client needs and colleague requests for support 
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and standards of professional conduct
  • Experience in the use of electronic/medical records systems; must be computer literate

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience as a case manager in a behavioral health care setting (i.e. Behavioral Health Unit, Day Treatment Program, Outpatient Mental Health Center). Experience providing behavioral health interventions in a medical setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work with required computerized clinical record keeping systems
  • Counseling experience in a college/university setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a university environment and of the developmental issues and difficulties typically encountered by college students

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Valid California licensure, in good standing, in Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy 
  • Prior to formal offer, will be required to successfully complete both a pre-hire criminal history background check and a pre*hire credentialing check.
  • Job will require occasional working of non-traditional hours
  • Must be able to work a predetermined hybrid work format and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Upon hire, selected candidate will be required to:
    • Complete HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility) training within 30 days of hire.
    • Complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years.
