About the Opportunity

JOB SUMMARY:

The Northeastern University Behavioral Health (UHCS) Counselor/Psychotherapist provides psychological counseling services to Northeastern University students. These services include psychological evaluation, crisis intervention and brief psychotherapy. The Counselor/Psychotherapist may also engage in outreach activities to the Northeastern University community and collaboration with various support services within the University.

The Counselor/Psychotherapist makes appropriate referrals for psychopharmacological evaluation and ongoing counseling in the local community, and for referral to emergency mental health services, when appropriate. Time spent amongst the various clinical service activities may shift in proportion to changes in service demands at any given time of the year. The Counselor/Psychotherapist often works closely with University academic departments and Student Life and collaborates with other members of the UHCS Behavioral Health and Medical staff as appropriate, all in the interest of providing the best possible team-oriented health care to Northeastern students. The Counselor/Psychotherapist may also occasionally participate in health promotion outreach to the University community.

Availability to work on occasional weekend days is required.

Availability by pager or phone on occasional evenings and overnight is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

1) Direct Clinical Services -

Provides direct clinical services including triage and assessment (in person and via telehealth), individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, disposition assignment, case management and documentation, and campus and community referrals.

2) Consultation and Outreach -

Provides psychoeducational programming and outreach to the University community. Serve on University, Divisional and UHCS committees, participate in health promotions outreach.

3) In-service and Interdisciplinary Supervision -

Participates in training and supervision to and from other Behavioral Health and Medical Staff, as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of principles of Social Work, Psychology or Counseling. Demonstrated experience and competency in urgent and crisis assessment and treatment, short-term psychotherapy, assessment, and treatment of young adults with alcohol/drug abuse, eating disorders and ADHD.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working collaboratively with all health center and academic support staff, as well as with community-based hospitals and health care providers.
  • Demonstrated consistency in working in a highly diverse student and staff setting with respect and competency.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success working within the clinical and administrative policies and procedures of a university health center setting.
  • Knowledge and skills required for this job are normally acquired through completion of a Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology or Counseling, with state license or eligibility (required) and at least two years relevant work experience. Full state licensure as LICSW, LMHC, LMFT or Psychologist required within one year of employment.
