Counselor, Mental Health (Full-Time Tenure Track Faculty)

Ideal Candidate Statement:

Position:
Under the general supervision of the Administrator, in collaboration with the Dean of Counseling, the Mental Health Counselor's responsibilities include individual and group short term personal and crisis counseling and screenings; provide consultation for instructional and student services faculty and staff regarding concerns for student mental health issues; provide counseling services to assist students' mental health management, problem resolution, crisis intervention, and assessing, planning, and implementing short-term and long-range goals; provide personal counseling for assistance with personal, family or other social concerns. The Mental Health Counselor will develop student, faculty, and staff trainings/workshops and develop student, faculty, and staff educational/resource materials. This position will work closely with the Student Health Center and is responsible for developing and supervising an internship program for graduate students pursuing degrees in mental health. This position will participate in research and review of effectiveness of counseling programs, policies and procedures; participate in college-wide, department and individual professional development activities including participation in governance of the college via committee assignments and/or club advisement. The position may require assignments in the evenings and/or weekends and/or at off-campus locations.


Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for mental health counseling functions of the assigned program.
Assist students with adjustments to college and personal development, as well as crisis counseling as needed.
Provide students with information regarding resources, opportunities and assistance available to them on the college and in the community.
Develop and supervise a graduate student internship or practicum training program for students pursing degrees in mental health; assist with the development and promotion of mental health awareness.
Actively engage in technological tools designed to assist the students and institution in moving students toward goal completion.
Develop curriculum, maintain appropriate records, and contribute to the Program Review process.
Develop and implement a variety of effective counseling and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles.
Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means including re-licensure as required by the Board of Behavioral Science Examiner (BBSE).
Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance and campus life activities.
Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues in the Counseling Department as well as college-wide on matters regarding programs and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the UFO (faculty bargaining unit) Contract, and as assigned at the Fremont and Newark campuses, and/or other designated locations.
Participate in the College Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and respond to mental health emergencies on campus; collaborate with Campus Police Services as needed to address student behavior and safety issues.
Serve as a resource for faculty in dealing with individual student problems; refer students to appropriate campus and community resources as needed relating to student mental health and collaborate with other institutions.
Perform other duties as assigned.


Desirable Qualifications:
Two years counseling experience in a higher education institution.
Certification from the Board of Behavioral Sciences to supervise graduate level interns acquiring their clinical hours.
Experience developing/coordinating workshops, programs, and events.
Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, including experience with course management systems (i.e. Blackboard, Canvas, etc.)
Experience in working with academically and culturally diverse student populations (teaching or other situations in a leadership role); familiarity with disability legislation desirable.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Ability to work successfully in a team environment.


Minimum Qualifications:
Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent
AND
Current license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) or current license as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
AND
Commitment to community college goals/objectives of being an equity-based and anti-racist institution, and providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests
AND
Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

Medical: Enrollment in medical coverage through the District is optional. For those faculty that choose to enroll in one of the offered medical plans, the District currently provides an allowance of $1,200 per month to offset the cost of the medical benefits premium.

Dental, Vision and Life Insurances: The District provides for and fully pays the premiums for you and your family for dental and vision, and the employee premium for life insurance. Enrollment in Dental, Vision and Life insurances are mandatory.

Long-term Disability (LTD) and Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The District provides for and fully pays the premiums for long-term disability for you and EAP for you and your family.

Sabbatical Leave: After 6 consecutive years of employment with the district you will be eligible for sabbatical leave. You will receive 100% pay for one semester leave and 70% for an academic year.

Enrollment Fee Waiver: Employees and their qualified dependents receive enrollment fee waiver for courses taken at Ohlone College.

Certificated employees belong to the United Faculty of Ohlone (UFO).
