The College and Science Department


The Science Department of Clackamas Community College (CCC) announces the availability of one full-time Biology Instructor faculty position beginning Fall quarter of 2021. The Department uses a lead instructor model where the lead instructor or instructors work collaboratively to provide class, lab and online content across all class sections. CCC offers a wide range of life and physical science courses for science majors and non-majors. There are six full-time biology instructors in the department. The College and the Department have a long-standing history of collective decision-making and does so with a central goal in mind - students must come first. Clackamas is a comprehensive community college in the Portland metro area that provides transfer degree programs, career programs, community education classes, developmental education, and training programs for business and industry.

The successful candidate will be a creative, collaborative, and participatory faculty member with an expertise in biology, molecular biology and biology education and who brings a passion for teaching and a desire to support and mentor CCC students.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Teach college-level lecture and laboratory courses in biology, including but not limited to, major's biology, general biology, introductory (allied health) biology, online biology, and other courses based on qualifications and interest. Other duties include:
  • regular participation in department, division, and college meetings as well as participating in committee work,
  • student recruitment and advising,
  • engagement in activities that enhance the department's rapport with area high schools, industry partners, and four-year institutions,
  • providing advice and assistance to laboratory personnel with respect to lab preparation, equipment, and materials used in the student laboratory.
It is expected that faculty members will participate in ongoing curriculum review and development, course and program assessment activities, and be active in professional organizations. As the role of faculty evolves, responsibilities and expectations transform appropriately.

AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

May provide assistance to other department personnel as workload and staffing levels dictate. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.

Qualifications

MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. M.S. in biology or M.S. in a closely related field such as microbiology, anatomy and physiology, or zoology with at least 30 graduate credit hours (quarter basis) in biology course work from an accredited institution. OR a M.S.//PhD in Biology education with an undergraduate degree in biology.
  2. One year of full-time teaching experience (or the equivalent in part-time hours), teaching general and/or majors biology. (A portion of the required teaching experience may be met by substantial graduate school TA experience.)


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Experience teaching all levels of college biology, including general biology, allied-health biology, major's biology, microbiology and anatomy and physiology.
  2. Teaching experience in biology with a diverse student body such as that found in a comprehensive community college.
  3. Evidence of ability to communicate effectively in written and oral forms.
  4. Demonstrated enthusiasm, creativity, and energy in the classroom and a commitment to student success.
  5. Experience with designing online courses and the use of distance learning management systems such as Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas, etc.
  6. Experience with curriculum development and management.
  7. Familiarity with a variety of educational theories and methods such as collaborative learning, computer-aided instruction, critical thinking, problem solving, teaching and learning styles, student-centered evaluation and assessment, and proficiency-based outcome assessment.
  8. Commitment to maintaining currency in the discipline as well as keeping up-to-date on teaching methodologies.
  9. Strong laboratory experience and experience in using innovative teaching methods/laboratory experiments that encourage students' engagement and learning.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility, including the use of step stools in order to retrieve archived materials. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis such as papers, files, boxes, equipment, computers, etc., and rarely requires moving materials weighing over 25 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, monitor, projector, calculator, printer, and standard office equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Supervision of other personnel is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel, and may assign work to student workers.

Works under the general direction of the Dean of Arts & Sciences.
