Description
The Academic Counselor provides advising support to a specific college or program. Advises first- and second-year students to help them plan their programs of study according to specified degree plans and to maximize their academic potential, and facilities the transition of juniors and seniors to departmental faculty advisors. Responsibilities include helping in the delivery, development, and implementation of effective academic counseling services as well as informational and academic advisor training programs and materials. The Academic Counselor also works with special population students during and beyond the first academic year: to include students in selected pre-major programs, Texas Success Initiative (TSI) responsible students, Conditionally Admitted students (ABR), and students identified as academically at-risk including First Year Probation (FYP), readmission, and suspension students. Works with students who need to re-evaluate their Major or degree program choices and may need intervention and/or referral to campus services. Participates in high school outreach programs and relevant program presentations. Reports to the Dean of the college and may serve on the Academic Advising Committee.

Examples
Works primarily with students to provide academic counseling and develop academic study plans in compliance with degree program requirements and/or NCAA guidelines, when working with student-athletes. Collaborates with academic departments to coordinate advising services for students. Participates in program assessments, training, and professional development workshops; maintains complete and accurate records; develops and participates in informational presentations during orientation and other relevant university sponsored events. Facilitates academic success services such as First Year Probation and TSI academic counseling, transitioning to academic programs, grade-checks, and academic referrals. Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Condition
Experience
A minimum of two years of academic experience in higher education preferred. Should also be experienced in the use of computer software programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook and familiarity with Banner or similar student Information systems preferred. Experience assisting distance and nontraditional students is helpful.

Knowledge
Must have knowledge of or be able to quickly learn the curricula and requirements of the College's various programs and the university's core curriculum. Must have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Education
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Must have a demonstrated interest in working with and assisting students. Must be able to handle a heavy volume of student traffic. Must be able to work on multiple projects concurrently. Must be able to maintain confidentiality. Must be able to make group presentations and participate in other professional activities. May serve as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *Designated as a Responsible Employee as outlined by Title IX. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
