The University of Southern Indiana invites applications for one full-time administrative position of Academic Counselor in USI's TRIO: Student Support Services Program. This is a grant funded position beginning immediately and the position will run through the life of the grant, which ends on August 31, 2025. The University will seek funding to renew this grant and all SSS positions past the initial grant period. The University is currently in its third grant-renewal cycle. The Academic Counselor will work closely with the SSS Program Director to provide administrative support for all aspects of the Student Support Services Program. The Academic Counselor is responsible for developing structured academic plans and providing comprehensive personal, academic, career, and financial advising to SSS Program eligible students. This person will also coordinate the design and development of materials and social/academic/cultural programs intended to assist SSS Program eligible students with meeting SSS grant objectives.

A master's degree is required. Strong preference will be given in the areas of higher education, counseling, or related disciplines. One to three years of demonstrated advising experience within TRIO or similar programs is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills and effective listening skills, suitable to working one-and-one with or in small groups of various individuals, including students, faculty and administration are required. The candidate must demonstrate skill in developing a rapport with students of diverse backgrounds. Teaching experience at the college level is preferred. Must demonstrate excellent organizational skills, be self-directed and work with minimal supervision. Strong demonstrated commitment to serving diverse and underrepresented student populations essential.

The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post baccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects.

To help motivate eligible students to successfully complete their degree, the SSS Program will provide students comprehensive services through classroom instruction, academic skill development, academic advising and career development, personal and financial aid counseling, and experiences designed to enhance the collegiate experience.
