Assistant Director for Diversity and Social Justice
Counseling Services at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full-time Assistant Director for Diversity and Social Justice position.
SUNY Oswego Counseling Services (CS) offers multi-disciplinary, comprehensive, and diverse services to students that enable them to be more successful in their academic, personal, and career pursuits. CS is IACS accredited and hosts masters-level graduate trainees and counselor education doctoral-level trainees for clinical internships from accredited education programs.
CS' efforts focus on helping students reduce psychological symptoms, cope with life events and developmental tasks, improve interpersonal skills and relationships, and increase self-knowledge. CS promotes equity and respect for individual and cultural differences and offers consulting services to the entire University community. CS is part of the Division of Student Affairs, which contributes to and facilitates critical learning and development within healthy, inclusive, and supportive communities.
Reporting to the Director of Counseling Services, the Assistant Director for Diversity and Social Justice is an integral part of the CS' Leadership Team, contributes to SUNY Oswego's diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives through a focus on engaging and collaborating with students and university partners; and provides direct clinical services to students. The work of the Assistant Director for Diversity and Social Justice supports the University's mission and vision of comprehensive well-being services for students, as well as the strategic initiatives of the University and the Division of Student Affairs to ensure student success.

Description of Responsibilities:
- As a member of the Counseling Services (CS) Leadership Team, ensure that CS offers services that support students from historically marginalized and underrepresented groups.
- Provide leadership to ensure that practices, policies, and protocols are reviewed and revised through an equity and inclusion lens and assess student needs to provide equitable and inclusive service.
- Develop, coordinate, and promote psychoeducational programs that focus on promoting identity-based equity in student mental health and wellness.
- Along with the CS Leadership Team, play a central role in building accountability among CS staff around DEI values and practice.
- Lead the department in its endeavors to recruit, attract, and retain a diverse staff and trainee classes. Participate in new staff on-boarding processes.
- Facilitate professional development programming for staff and trainees regarding ongoing cultural responsiveness, attention to context, and centering intersectionality as it pertains to service delivery, training, and internal operations in line with upholding the multicultural, ethical, and professional standards of all disciplines represented within the department.
- Liaise and collaborate with student organizations, academic departments, and administrative offices, including the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Triandiflou Institute for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Transformative Practice, which attend to and serve historically marginalized and underrepresented students.
- Engage meaningfully with leadership and university partners to advise, collaborate, and enhance university climate - serving as the expert on the intersections of student well-being and DEI.
- Provide clinical services, including intake assessments; individual and group counseling/therapy through both in-person and tele-mental health services; crisis intervention; case management; consultation with staff, faculty, families, and students, at a reduced load proportional to other leadership responsibilities. This load is subject to increase by the Director and Associate Director during peak clinical need.
- Serve in the on-duty rotation, as necessary.
- Provide clinical supervision and training as needed for trainees from multiple disciplines.
- Provide consultation to faculty, administrators, families, and community providers about students of concern and campus-wide mental health issues.
- Participate in multidisciplinary and leadership team meetings.
- Provide clinical supervision of unlicensed staff and interns, and other staff as needed.
- As clinical load permits, attend meetings, workshops and training programs that will benefit the university, the Division, the department and/or will promote the professional development of the counselor.
- Participate in the routine office/administrative operations of Counseling Services including maintaining up to date clinical records; carrying out pertinent correspondence; and developing and maintaining a cooperative working relationship with department colleagues and other university and community groups.
- Provide other clinical/counseling related services and activities as assigned.
- Serve on university, division, and department committees as requested.

Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in a mental health related field (clinical or counseling psychology, social work, mental health counseling) from an accredited program.
- 3 years professional experience providing counseling and therapy in a university/college mental health setting.
- Required to have NY State license within 3 months of start date: Independently Licensed in NY or Licensed in another state and license eligible, as an independently licensed mental health provider in New York State.
- Demonstrated interest and experience with promoting social justice and working with marginalized and underrepresented populations.
- Commitment to providing culturally responsive counseling to marginalized and underrepresented university communities.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse university community of students, faculty, administrators, and families.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctoral Degree in related field.
- NY State LMHC-D, diagnostic privilege.
- Excellent administrative, communication, leadership, decision-making skills and the ability to work autonomously within a team atmosphere.
- Strong written and verbal communication, organizational skills, and an ability to provide outreach and training to groups of people.
- Experience providing risk assessments and crisis intervention.
