  • This position requires development and review of curriculum, as well as, assessment of student learning.
  • The teaching assignment may require teaching lecture-discussion courses during day, evening, or on Saturday and/or in an on-line/distance education format.
  • The assignments are based on departmental need on a semester-by-semester basis.

Distinguishing Characteristics


Under the direction and supervision of the Dean of Student Support, the EOPS Counselor will provide a wide range of counseling, and support services to EOPS students. This position will perform core counseling functions: academic, career, and personal counseling as well as crisis intervention and outreach. May work a flexible schedule that may include summer, evening, weekend, on- and off-campus assignments.

Essential Duties


  • Provide comprehensive counseling services to EOPS students including academic, career and personal counseling on a drop-in and appointment basis both day and evening.
  • Provide group counseling sessions, orientations, workshops, and other activities to support students getting information and support related to college success.
  • Assist students to understand educational options, clarify educational goals, engage in educational and career planning, participate in the development of Student Educational Plans (SEPs) and course selection.
  • Evaluate student progress toward established goals; provide intervention and follow-up services to students on probation and dismissal status.
  • Coordinate program activities and student services to support student success.
  • Conduct outreach activities and assist students with matriculating into the college.
  • Participate in the implementation of transfer and matriculation activities at the college.
  • Establish rapport with students; regularly review, monitor, and track students' academic progress to ensure attainment of educational goal.
  • Maintain relevant and timely communication with students on caseload throughout their enrollment; and utilize appropriate case management tools and technology to monitor student progress and success.
  • Facilitate access to basic needs such as food, housing, and transportation and health services as they relate to our EOPS and foster youth population.
  • Facilitate access and exposure to career, leadership and enrichment events and conferences for students.
  • Serve as a liaison with on-campus and off-campus agencies that support youth in care i.e., Financial Aid, Accessible Education Center, social services, county office of education, and community agencies.
  • Serve as an advocate for students.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience


  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling from an accredited college or university OR the equivalent
  • AND 1) Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages.


OR
  • 2) Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages AND Two (2) years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or academic disadvantages.

Ability to:
  • Provide culturally relevant counseling and student services to students from ethnically diverse backgrounds, including first generation and low-income students.
  • Communicate effectively with and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and managers.
  • Collaborate effectively with other departments to facilitate student support services.
  • Apply an equity-minded framework and ensure programs, services and processes are designed and delivered to meet the varying needs of all constituents.
  • Exercise sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college.

Experience/Knowledge of:
  • Trauma-informed counseling practices.
  • Developing and conducting academic and personal development opportunities and activities specific to the needs of first generation, low-income students.
  • Principles of student engagement, development, and success
