Veterans Counselor/School Certifying Official (Student Advocacy Specialist 2)

The Office of Veterans Programs is seeking a qualified Veterans Counselor/School Certifying Official. This position is primarily responsible for the accurate and expedient certification of Department of Veterans Affairs educational benefits. In addition, this position provides counseling for military veteran and military dependent students, both graduate and undergraduate, on financial, academic, and/or personal matters, including the transition to the civilian/University environment.

The Candidate will:
  • Monitor and adhere to the frequently evolving Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) regulations and procedures regarding the certification of educational benefits.
  • Assist in overseeing the enrollment monitoring systems for reporting to the VA.
  • Maintain effective liaison relationships with the Pennsylvania Department of Education State Approving Agency (SAA), the VA, Departments of Defense (DOD), and Homeland Security (DHS) to ensure compliance in reporting.
  • Assist in advising the Commonwealth Campus School Certifying Officials on issues to include regulations governing the various VA education certification procedures, enrollment monitoring procedures, and organizational suggestions.
  • Engage in training opportunities designed to enhance the understanding of the VA's various educational benefits, certification process, and the responsibilities of and support offered by the VA, the DOD, the DHS, and the SAA.
  • Requires a firm understanding of basic math calculations, keen attention to detail, and the ability to adapt quickly to changes in regulations and processes.


Typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher one (1) year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A degree in counselor education, college student personnel, psychology, social work, education, higher education administration, or related discipline or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Veteran or military affiliation preferred.
