Job Description Summary:
The First Year Advisor / Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator supports new students in making a successful transition to college by providing resources for success, engagement initiatives and advising so that new students become full members of the SMC community. In addition, they will identify any gaps in equity, diversity, or opportunity amongst our students and then to work with the proper stakeholders to address these issues. They will also manage the George Grady Scholarship Program by recruiting and mentoring students in the program.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in a related area 2 years working with under-represented students

Preferred Qualifications:
A minimum of two years of experience in higher education or a combination of education and experience commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of this position Masters Degree in a related area

Other Information:
First-Year Advisor Advise and register students for their first and second semester of classes and certificate programs by teaching and assisting students in the self-registration process and accessing Dashboard. Identify required placement exams and interpret scores; inform students of alternative credit and test out options; review prior coursework to determine eligibility for course waivers and submit waivers as necessary. Participate in new student onboarding events, such as New Student Orientation and First Year Experience Programming. Maintain continuous lines of communication with academic deans, academic advisors, and the records office regarding scheduling issues, overrides, and curriculum variances. Provide excellent service to all visitors in the Office of First Year Experience answering questions from students and guests, helping students with paperwork, and teaching students how to use SMC resources. Utilize Banner Student Information System and other various software systems to enter overrides, collect and analyze data, and perform other key operations. Participate in student retention efforts, including but not limited to: cohort management, resource workshops, engagement initiatives. Represent First Year Experience in a professional way during all interactions with students, parents, faculty, staff, and the general public. This representation includes, but is not limited to: meetings, events, face-to-face encounters as well as dialogue and commentary via phone, email, and social media. Diversity and Inclusion Identify any gaps in equity, diversity, or opportunity amongst our students and then to work with the proper stakeholders to address these issues. Lead workshops and/or facilitate the delivery of academic success programming (time management, organizational skills, note-taking, test-taking, SMART goals, etc.) Will help to develop programming to celebrate student success. Outline, in coordination with the Dean of Student Development, measurable outcomes of retention and enrollment of under-represented students. Act as liaison between Campus Life and Academics: assists in getting the student to meet with advisors, counselor, and campus resources, such as tutoring. Conduct research and develop new programs geared towards SMCs under-represented student populations. Assist with campus-wide initiative such as: EDUC 120, New Student Orientation, Welcome Week. Serve on various College committees: Diversity Committee, Retention and Student Engagement Committee, Academic Intervention Team. Provide a high level of service and working in a collaborative team environment. Handle confidential information with utmost discretion. Support the Colleges strategic plan in all activities and projects implemented. Leader Scholarship Program Lead Student Scholarship Program. Develop the objectives and leadership outcomes for this new scholarship program, including summer programming, leadership programming, and retention programming. Recruit local (within the College district) underrepresented students with leadership potential and give them a jumpstart on their curricular and extracurricular goals. Advise and mentor scholarship students to increase student success and persistence. The duties listed in this job description are not all-inclusive, but a list of the major responsibilities.
