This Employer Relations Manager position is new to UCSC.  The selected individual will play a critical role in conducting outreach to attract top employers in support of internships and employment for our students, and work closely as an integral part of the career services team to enhance the breadth and volume of job opportunities available to all UCSC students.  

Position Summary

This position conducts outreach and builds relationships with employer organizations for student internships and permanent employment, manages employer/student interactions, assists students with job search strategies, and broadly supports UCSC's business engagement initiatives and activities. The Manager is charged with elevating the UCSC brand as a source of talent for employers, and advising students about recruitment, hiring processes, and the competencies most needed to succeed in different labor market segments. This position is based at UCSC Silicon Valley Extension (UNEX).

Working under the supervision of the Director of Corporate Partnerships at UNEX, and in close coordination with the Senior Director of Corporate Development in Baskin Engineering, the Executive Director of Business Engagement in University Relations, and the Executive Director of UCSC Career Center, the Employer Relations Manager - SILICON VALLEY CAMPUS develops and implements effective employer engagement strategies to increase student employment and experiential opportunities, such as co-ops and internships. The Employer Relations Manager leverages analytics for job development, employer outreach & student engagement; establishes short and long-range goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures; oversees collection and analysis of employment data; monitors and evaluates program effectiveness; manages and expands employer outreach and engagement; and advises students regarding job search strategies. Facilitates connectivity with a broad base of companies surrounding full time employment and internship opportunities. Works with students, alumni, corporate recruiters, and HR managers to facilitate successful career matches; works with the Career Center to plan, organize and manage job fairs.

Salary Information:  $55,100 - $75,000 / Annually.  Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Job Duties
50% - Employer Outreach    

Develops and manages ongoing relationships with companies, agencies and organizations across multiple industries, leading to employment and internship opportunities for students.

In coordination with the Career Center, the Senior Director of Corporate Development at the Baskin School of Engineering, the Executive Director of Business Engagement and the Director of Corporate Partnerships, conducts outreach to establish access and direct pathways to job opportunities, internships, and co-ops for students.

Maintains and enhances relationships with corporations and other organizations to develop strong connectivity with UCSC around hiring and recruitment.

Identifies new employers, and initiates and develops relationships with them.

Expands the base of employers recruiting from UCSC; builds new, and sustains existing relationships with recruiters and hiring managers.

Creates / develops new experiential and practical training opportunities and internships for students at employer sites.

Markets students to specific companies based on alignment between students' interests and the hiring organizations' recruitment needs.

Educates employers on best ways to connect with students, and on the tools available for engaging with student candidates.

Develops and implements programs to promote recruitment opportunities for employers.    
 
Constructs pathways for UCSC students to enter desired employment sectors and career fields.  

Regularly communicates by phone and by email with employer contacts.

Cultivates internships, co-ops, and employment opportunities for UCSC students and alumni.

30% - Internal Programming    

Promotes awareness and provides visibility to students and alumni regarding employment and internship opportunities.

Coordinates with employer partners to conduct on-campus-and-virtual employer focused events, info sessions, and interviews.

Develops and manages Silicon Valley based career fairs for all UCSC students.

Enriches student experience and employability by building strong connections with potential employers.

Builds, modifies, and delivers workshops to bring students and companies into contact with each other around the topic of internships, recruitment, and employment.

Networks with alumni and others sources to strengthen and broaden relationships.

Counsels Continuing Education students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services for specific populations.

Helps clients identify their interests, values, skills, and personalities, and fosters their understanding of how these factors relate to academic / career satisfaction and choices.

Provides guidance to departments / colleges / schools on providing resources to meet students' career needs.

Helps with decision making, goal setting, action planning, and identifying internal / external obstacles to obtaining goals.

Identifies personal crisis situations and refers clients to appropriate resources.

Uses standard quantitative and qualitative assessments to help clients assess career goals.

Manages accounts and student access to career development tools such as resume builder systems, job boards, artificial intelligence (AI) training aids, etc..

15% - Research    

Researches, evaluates, and updates written and electronic career and educational resources.

Researches and organizes economic and employment trend data, and designs materials for presentation to students and organization professionals.

5% - Misc    

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Strong knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design.
  • Effective verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse cultures.
  • Good organization skills.
  • Willingness to reach out to HR departments at Silicon Valley-based corporations to help find internship, co-op, and employment opportunities for our students.
  • Ability to modify computer applications to meet program needs.
  • Ability to identify problems.
