Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), part of Vaden Health Center at Stanford University, invites LCSW/LMFT/LPC applicants for the position of Dual Diagnosis Staff Therapist, specializing in the treatment of alcohol and other drugs. This role is a 12-month, full-time position, currently funded for 2 years with potential for renewal. CAPS is a college mental health clinic with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals who are dedicated to the pursuit of clinical excellence, organizational diversity, and social justice. Vaden Health Center is within the Division of Student Affairs, which advances student development and learning, fosters community engagement, and empowers students and staff to thrive.
This new position has been developed to serve students who are currently or have historically struggled with substance use, abuse and/or dependence through engagement with the larger Stanford community and direct, recovery-oriented clinical services. The Dual Diagnosis Therapist will balance student needs with outreach, training, and collaborative consultation with campus partners. Candidates for this position should have a demonstrated knowledge of the wide complexity and presentation of alcohol and substance use, as well as the ability to identify diverse resources and interventions. Candidates should have strong ability to engage students where they are at, an understanding of stages of change, and knowledge of current substance use trends and assessments.
The successful candidate will have a deep commitment to cultural humility and equity. They will be able to showcase a history of working across diverse identities (including but not limited to race, gender, sexuality, and ability status) and demonstrate their commitment to inclusivity. The candidate will have a working understanding of the strengths of diverse students as well as an awareness of the role that systems play in privileging certain groups of students while marginalizing others. Finally, the successful candidate will have the skills to provide culturally sensitive care.
In this role, you will:
Provide clinical care services, outreach programming, and staff/community training to address the Dual Diagnosis treatment needs of the Stanford student body; and to provide clinical care, on-call services, and outreach programming for other student needs as required.
- Provide wide range of direct clinical services to meet the treatment needs of dually- diagnosed Stanford students, including:
- Initial clinical assessments and individual brief therapy
- Therapy groups and clinical workshops
- Crisis response, evaluations, and interventions for students with urgent needs
- Care management consultations, including assessment of need for higher levels of care and management of referrals to community providers when indicated
- Documenting treatment, progress, and safety planning according to best practices.
- Work with campus staff, administrators, and faculty for consultation and outreach needs including:
- Consultation and direct support for urgent campus mental health needs or crises
Clinical and outreach services through participation in community programming, including providing psycho-educational workshops and outreach education
Liaison relationships with community centers and other campus entities
Engage with the collegiate recovery community and providing support to students living in substance free housing
Conduct training seminars for CAPS staff and trainees
Participate in CAPS and Vaden Health Center meetings and development activities
Complete special projects as assigned.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Master's degree in social work or psychology or related field and two years post-degree experience.
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or Licensed Professional Counselor
- Licensed in the state of California
- CAADE / CADTP / CCAPP registered desired, but not required
- Clinical expertise with alcohol and drug assessment, treatment, harm reduction strategies and motivational interviewing
- Expertise in evaluation, crisis intervention, therapy, and care management
- Knowledge of trauma and its impact on substance use.
- Ability to administer American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and utilize DSM criteria to identify substance use & dual-diagnosis issues.
- Experience in determining the appropriate level of care and coordinating care systems
- Experience working from a strengths-based, social rehabilitation model
- Ability to develop outreach and psychoeducational programming on AOD issues
- Proven ability to support diverse constituencies.
- Strong communication skills (oral and written).
In addition, preferred requirements include:
- Three or more years of post-licensure work history
- Previous experience working in college counseling centers.
- Counseling experience with diverse populations, including individuals identifying as minority gender, sexual orientation, race, and/or ethnicity.
- Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations.
- Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety; communicates safety concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned.
