Southwestern Community College District (SCCD) is seeking one full-time, tenure track, equity-focused counseling faculty member who is committed to serving its' culturally diverse student population.Southwestern Community College District seeks a faculty member who will foster an inclusive learning environment through equity-minded counseling, teaching, leadership, and service to students working toward goals of language acquisition, non-credit to credit pathway, short term programs, university transfer, associate degree and certificate completion, employment advancement, and personal growth.

SCCD's strategic south San Diego County locations position the College to provide exceptional service to a binational community on the U.S.-Mexico International Border. OUR STUDENTS Southwestern Community College District currently enrolls approximately 28,000 students annually that includes a noncredit population of approximately 1,500 students. SCCD is comprised of 69% Hispanic students, 10% Caucasian students, 9% Filipino students, 4% African American students, and 3% Asian students. Approximately 63% of the College's students are under the age of 24 with 23% between the ages 25-39. Our students' gender demographics are represented by 55% female and 44% male.

RESPONSIBILITIES:Under the direction of the Dean, Counseling and Student Support Programs or designee, the Counselor will be responsible for providing equity-minded academic, career and personal counseling to a diverse student population. The Counselor will provide services including serving as Field of Study/Guided Pathways counselor, interpretation of assessment results; development of individual academic/career/educational plans; orientation presentations to large groups of new students; small group advisement prior to registration; make referral to other appropriate services, follow-up on student progress; and participate in District shared governance and/or other committees.

  1. Confer with and advise students concerning Noncredit, applications, policies and procedures; personal problems, needs, and interests; assist individual students to resolve problems they may encounter with the educational and administrative systems of the College, including transition from adult education and/or SWC noncredit to SWC credit programs.

Knowledge and Abilities:
  1. Provide guidance to students in establishing educational goals and in selecting a curriculum appropriate to the students needs, interests, and capacities; assist students in the selection of individual courses to achieve their educational goals.
  2. Participate in coordinating with instructional and counseling faculty, and student support personnel to encourage Noncredit students to enroll and succeed in classes leading to attainment of their goals and identify clear pathways to the college credit program and workforce.
  3. Participate in Continuing Education, California Adult Education Program (CAEP) and college-wide planning teams and assist in the development and implementation of programs and services to assist students in attaining their goals.
  4. Participate in planning, delivery, and data management of services to Noncredit student target populations: ESL (non-native English speakers), Basic Skills, Older Adults, Adults with Disabilities/Disabled Student Services, immigrants, Parents, Short-term Career Technical Education (CTE), Apprenticeship, Workforce Preparation, and At-Risk.
  5. Participate in coordinating with the Districts support service programs, in addition to Credit and Noncredit discipline faculty to identify, coordinate, and develop effective support activities to assist Noncredit students in overcoming barriers to their success.
  6. Ensure that special population students will be provided access to services designed to assist them to meet their educational goals by making appropriate referrals (DSS, Veterans, etc.).
  7. Participate in developing the integration of support activities where appropriate (such as the career center, counseling, outreach, Disability Support Services, CalWORKs, EOPS, Veterans, library, skills centers, and tutorial center), for Noncredit students on the college campuses, centers, and community sites.

In addition to counseling duties, the Counselor will assist in the development of programs and services to promote student enrollment, retention and completion; participate in developing curriculum for Personal Development programs; instruct Personal Development classes; participate in joint projects with instructional faculty; serve as liaison to instructional schools and centers; and participate in partnership activities with feeder school districts, other colleges/universities, and community colleges.

Education and Experience:

Minimum Qualifications: (Faculty and Academic Administrator Positions Only)
Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling,
Bachelors degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
Possession of a valid California Community College Credential in Counseling
the equivalent.

Please note, this position is not a mental health therapist position at Southwestern Community College District. It is focused on academic counseling and not associated with behavioral health or located within our personal wellness department.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Community college counseling experience specific to adult education.
  • Knowledge of the Student Equity & Achievement Program and the California Adult Education Program for community colleges.
  • Understanding of guided pathways and student services redesign to deliver equitable outcome.
  • Experience with computerized student information systems.
  • Experience with instruction and curriculum development, understanding of developmental education.
  • Experience with student educational planning, transfer planning, and career-technical counseling and planning strategies.
  • Application of career counseling and assessment strategies.
  • Crisis counseling; and community based organizations awareness.
  • Also, an understanding of Title V, Categorical programs and changes impacting Student Services.
  • Specialized experience with online counseling, First Year Experience, Foster Youth, Restorative Justice or Veteran Students is desired.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish/English and other languages.
  • Two years of experience working with currently or formerly incarcerated adults.

Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based upon years of experience and education. Initial salary placement for experience can range from $68,468.00-$103,022.00 per year. Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.
