Job Summary
The Division of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine has an immediate
opening for a Genetic Counselor. This position is responsible for providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects, genetic disorders or who may be at risk for a variety of inherited cardiac conditions. The care provider identifies, investigates, interprets, and communicates potential risk factors and provides support and counseling to families and care team members. This job has both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities. Responsibilities
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Essential Functions
- Utilizes specific, detailed knowledge of genetics and acts as a consultant with applicable patient care specialists and referring care providers in providing professional options for the development of a collaborative plan of care. This may include providing recommendations for screening and evaluation for the patient and family members in addition to providing individualized patient and family education, emotional support, and counseling. Provides grief and crisis counseling as needed.
- Desire to work in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Evaluates complex medical and genetic literature and incorporates it into clinical practice.
- Provide clinical genetic counseling and care coordination within a busy genetics clinic staffed with a geneticist twice monthly.
- Oversees and/or answers questions regarding genetic testing and counseling consultations, as directed by the Division of Pediatric Cardiology.
- Desire to work within a collaborative, motivated team where responsibilities, roles, and patients are shared by genetic counseling team members.
- Contribute to a team culture that aims for consistent, supportive collaboration within our care team, while encouraging individual growth areas and professional pursuits.
- Clear, intentional, and thoughtful communication with team members is necessary.
- Will engage in research activities related to the field of cardiovascular genetics and genetic counseling. This includes support within the division for ongoing research efforts as well as team and individually initiated research involving cardiovascular genetics.
- Desire to engage in CV genetics program growth and development of operations and procedures to support the growing need for genetics within the division of cardiology.
- Support and display equitable care to all patient groups and develop care models that increase genetic counseling and testing equity.
Working Conditions and Physical DemandsEmployee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.This position involves light work that may exert up to 20 pounds and may consistently requirelight work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects involvingpatient care or medical equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Required
Current license as a Genetic Counselor in the State of Utah.
Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
Preferred
Licensure to practice in a clinical field.

Work Schedule Summary: Full-time, 40 hours per week. Monday through Friday, from 8am - 5pm, with some flexibility available. Hours may vary based on operational needs.
