Part-Time Disabilities Counselor, Accessibility Services (Lynn campus)

Professional MCCC Unit Position

Non-benefited, 20 hours/week, Tuesday-Friday 9:00am-2:00pm (Academic Calendar) - In Person

This position is employed during the academic school year when students are in session. Individuals will have unpaid summers, holidays, and semester breaks off.

Employment is renewed each semester based on budgetary allowance.


SALARY: $35.31/hr., Non-benefited, MCCC position

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Performs activities and the delivery of services as a team member of the College's Accessibility Services Department. Works to ensure that documented students with disabilities have equal access to college programs, activities, and services. Reviews/interprets medical documentation, and evaluates submitted diagnostic information for students with varying disabilities to determine, as a team member, the eligibility for protection under Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment (ADAAA), Section 504, and other applicable legislation.

Conducts student intake interviews with requesting students to determine program eligibility and reasonable accommodations in accordance with applicable laws and policies. Maintains a working knowledge in the area of assistive and adaptive technology and its role in serving students with disabilities.

Maintains an active caseload of students with disabilities to assist in the planning and implementation of their educational, career and personal goals and objectives. Provides academic guidance and advocacy skill development to students with disabilities as they proceed through post-secondary academic life.

Interacts with various agencies/individuals (i.e. represents the department to the public; collaborates with other college divisions and personnel; provides mediation and conflict resolution between faculty/staff and students; communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, students, faculty members, the public, other academic institutions, funding agencies, state/federal agencies, vocational rehabilitation agencies, human service agencies, outside agencies, and other individuals to coordinate activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Conducts intake interviews with requesting students to evaluate and interpret diagnostic and medical documentation to determine eligibility of reasonable accommodations.
  2. Provides academic, vocational, and social counseling by maintaining an active caseload of students with disabilities.
  3. Works closely with the Accessibility Services personnel in providing the appropriate delivery of assistive/adaptive technology services and accommodations for students with disabilities.
  4. Maintains knowledge of current disability laws to ensure compliance; makes ADAAA recommendations to the college; serves on college committees and task forces related to accessibility, accommodations, and advocacy for students with disabilities.
  5. Consults and serves as resource to college community especially faculty regarding student accommodations and disability information.
  6. Participates in editing, revising and distributing information concerning Accessibility Services.
  7. Participates in the development of goals and objectives for Accessibility Services and provides on-going modification plans as part of the institutional planning process.
  8. Participates in relevant professional development opportunities.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned to meet the needs and development of documented students with disabilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Assistant Director of Accessibility Services

Job Requirements:
  • Master's in special education, career counseling, psychology, or a closely related field
  • At least three years of experience and/or training that includes working in a college, high school, or rehabilitation setting with students with disabilities especially in career, vocational and technical areas; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Community college experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504;
  • Knowledge in delivering or working with assistive technology.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with a proven track record as a team player.
  • Experience utilizing an integrated computerized system; BANNER preferred
  • Must have excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills;
  • Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations.
  • Must possess the ability to travel between campuses, as needed.
  • Must have a strong understanding and support of the social model of disability.
  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or National background check as a condition of employment.
