Position Summary

The Academic Counselor for Student-Athletes serves as part of a team in the Office of Student-Athletic Advising. The mission of the office is to support the more than 550 Division 1 NCAA student-athletes who play on 20 teams at Fordham University, offering student-athletes the resources and direction needed to achieve their scholastic potential and to prepare them for post-graduate scholastic, athletic, and career opportunities.

The Academic Counselor for Student-Athletes is responsible for providing academic support and guidance for student-athletes, with a particular focus on undergraduate student-athletes.

Essential Functions

Academic Support and Counseling

Supports student-athletes in their transition to Fordham, focusing on overall academic, personal, and social well-being, as well as development of self-efficacy.

Develops academic strategies for success, connect students to resources and opportunities, support campus engagement, and serves as a source of ongoing support for a caseload of student-athletes (typically all members of a specified set of teams).

Collaborates with campus departments, faculty, and coaches in support of student engagement, retention, and success efforts.

Refers students to appropriate academic personnel and support resources and collaborates with other areas at Fordham to monitor and support the academic progress; track participation and provide additional support as needed.

Directly supports the education of student-athletes about the office and the University as a whole.

Works directly with students to identify and implement appropriate interventions as necessary.

Assesses the needs of student-athletes and, as appropriate develops, manages, implements, and monitors mentoring and tutoring sessions.

Promotes strategies for student success and retention through individual and group meetings.

Works closely with others in the office to ensure that student-athletes are meeting university and NCAA eligibility requirements.

Collaborates with coaching staff around student well-being.

As needed, assists with academic recruiting presentations and visits for prospective student-athletes.

Academic Guidance

Counsels and supports student-athletes in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals regarding course of study, time to degree, course load (including summer courses) and career pathways.

Provides developmental academic advising to student-athletes, in collaboration with deans' office staff for undergraduates in the Gabelli School of Business, the School of Professional and Continuing Studies, and upper-class students in Fordham College at Rose Hill:

Serves as support advisor through graduation, in collaboration with the Fordham College Advising Center for first- and second-year students Fordham College at Rose Hill (eventually, as a new advising model is phased in, all students in this college):

Monitors academic performance and track progress towards degree completion.

Additional Functions

Some evening and weekend work will be required along with possible travel.

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in psychology, counseling, education, sports management, or related field required.

Demonstrated understanding of DEI efforts and programming within the context of collegiate athletics.

Demonstrated counseling and advising skills

Ability to work constructively and collaboratively in a diverse environment, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusting relationships.

Ability to effectively interact and work with coaches

Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in counseling, education, advising, sports management, psychology, or related field.

Demonstrated experience in supporting student-athletes in areas such as advising, career / leadership development, academic support, or personal development.

Familiarity with the time and scholastic challenges faced by student-athletes seeking excellence in scholarship and sports at a rigorous Division I institution.

Strong knowledge of college student development theory.

Knowledge and experience of NCAA rules and the NCAA Applications platform.

Working knowledge of G-Suite, Salesforce, and Banner.

Demonstrated understanding of Fordham University's commitment to Jesuit education.

Minimum Starting Salary: $60,000

Maximum Starting Salary: $67,500

Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
